I would just like to say that Randy Newman is a god and perhaps the most quintessential American songwriter in terms of articulating this country's ugly, flawed, darkly amusing character. There are so many good choices on the New York Times list, but I wish he'd been included.

It's a pretty solid list! I'd have definitely made room for Mike Stoller, Jimmy Webb, John Kander, and maybe David Byrne and Billy Joel. And there are some people who will, if they keep going, make the list in 10-15 years: Olivia Rodrigo, Adrianne Lenker, Phoebe Bridgers. But overall I'm not mad!

What I find most interesting about this exercise is that most of the people on this list -- while deserving -- have not produced any meaningful work in years; in some cases, decades. Who is relevant today that would replace them?

I think the definition of “song” is too narrow and I bet some of the folks on the list would agree. But to pick one thing from this: Meshell Ndegeocello on Lana Del Rey. There is a lot to unpack here to say nothing of who isn’t on the list!
