With student A.I. use/abuse now ubiquitous, professors and teachers are killing off take-home essays and papers. Students are writing inside the classroom, often by hand. It's part of the big rethink happening on tech and learning. My new report here: www.nytimes.com/2026/04/30/u...
In the era of artificial intelligence, take-home writing assignments have become so difficult to police for integrity that many educators have simply stopped assigning them. Instead, in a rapid shift, teachers are requiring students to write inside the classroom. www.nytimes.com/2026/04/30/u...
Very illuminating piece by @danagoldstein.bsky.social showing the current state of play. One other thing I really wish for is the conversation to include assigning and supporting out-of-class writing, even with AI in the world. This is my focus in talks and workshops. www.nytimes.com/2026/04/30/u...
“They are using generative A.I. to write before they learn how to write. They are reading ChatGPT summaries of a book before they have ever read a book,” he said. “The result is a diminished population.” www.nytimes.com/2026/04/30/u...
One of the best lessons I ever had on writing was in AP English when our teacher would put a piece of a poem (or a whole short poem) on the board and we would spend the first 20 minutes of class writing a reaction to it. Sounds like old school methods are coming back. www.nytimes.com/2026/04/30/u...
“But she and many other educators who have moved writing into the classroom described relief at being able to abandon the highly imperfect science of A.I. detection. Student reliance on chatbots had gotten ‘worse and worse’ as the technology gained sophistication, Ms. Binney said.” Fantastic story.
"Between May and December of 2025, the share of American middle school, high school and college students who reported regularly using AI for homework increased from 48 to 62 percent...even as two-thirds of students said the technology harmed critical-thinking skills." www.nytimes.com/2026/04/30/u...

Writing is an invention that is about 5000 years old. No one killed & revived it in 6 months. This is next level absurdity. It's time people learn how writing actually works from people who study it all day, every day. Prioritize the funding of writing programs. www.nytimes.com/2026/04/30/u...

Yet another article about AI, teaching, and learning. Tiresome. Best are the comments in which faculty suggest good pedagogical strategies and confirm what we are all experiencing. But no answers for online teaching or the larger issues. #academicsky www.nytimes.com/2026/04/30/u...

I was interviewed by Dana Goldstein for the NYTs about how writing instruction is responding to AI. It’s true many are returning to analog techniques to curb AI misuse. Some are also trying to incorporate AI to help students develop discernment about AI use: www.nytimes.com/2026/04/30/u...

I used to have my #writing #students take a midterm and then I'd show them their grammatical mistakes live and in person. For the final, they'd have to revise the midterm in class. I guess I was ahead of my time. #AI #ArtificialIntelligence #teaching www.nytimes.com/2026/04/30/u...

The video here with this piece. What a bizarre way to hold a pencil 🤔 — is writing now THAT alien?! Looks like a recipe for future carpal tunnel misery How A.I. Killed Student Writing (and Revived It) www.nytimes.com/2026/04/30/u...
High school and college teachers are watching students write, in the classroom, in order to protect against the incursion of artificial intelligence.

I understand why educators are moving toward in-person, handwritten tests to verify the quality of work, but it sure does seem like a step backwards for learning and access to education in almost every way.
