#MacroEconomics #Housing NYT: 7.2 Million U.S. homes sit vacant due to high cap gains tax? "In the 49 most populous U.S. metro areas, the data showed a correlation between the number of vacant single-family homes and the share of owners 65 years old and older." www.nytimes.com/2026/04/30/r...
This is "Mr Market" telling you that people who own empty houses are undertaxed... www.nytimes.com/2026/04/30/r...
"Stepped up basis" is such a huge scam. www.nytimes.com/2026/04/30/r...
Ridiculous to have this during a housing shortage. Empty homes should be taxed at a rate high enough to motivate sellers. www.nytimes.com/2026/04/30/r...
Calling taxes "expensive" is embarrassingly illiterate and innumerate. www.nytimes.com/2026/04/30/r...
I think we should take all their empty second houses away so they won't have to pay any taxes on the transaction at all. I feel the same way about this as I do about "non-profits" www.nytimes.com/2026/04/30/r...
Buried in the text: "The federal capital gains exemption on taxing sales of primary residences was not factored into the analysis." Yeah, taxes on the capital gains people realize when selling rental and vacation homes is way too high. I don't know how you publish this crap and don't commit sudoku.
This is how absolutely distorted the American economy has become. As the report says, βRoughly 7.2 million single-family homes are sitting empty and being kept off the market, according to the real estate investment service Flock Homes, contributing to a nationwide housing shortage.
