Yesterday I was *this* close to tweeting "you don't really ever hear much about David Allan Coe these days and that kinda makes me sad even though it's probably a positive thing, culturally."

“Take This Job and Shove It” was on the juke box at the Tune Inn on Capitol Hill in DC back in the 80s. Whenever a friend changed jobs we would go to there and play it over and over while the beers flowed.

NYT says David Allan Coe wrote for the Dead Kennedys in the obit. I can't find anything beside them covering Take This Job and Shove It..... Which uhhhhh I wouldn't exactly call that writing for them.

"I was drunk the day my mom got out of prison / And I went to pick her up in the rain,” Mr. Coe sang on the record’s final chorus, backed by a weeping dobro and a nimble country rhythm section. “But before I could get to the station in my pickup truck / She got runned over by a damned old train.”
Dude wrote and recorded some all-time bangers.
He also recorded some of the most racist and homophobic garbage ever put out.
He later disavowed it. And I continue to believe people should be granted grace and space to change for the better.
RIP to a complicated country legend.
