The invisible force making food less nutritious
Surging concentrations of carbon in the atmosphere have produced potent changes in the way plants grow, draining the nutrients from food.

Our food is growing less nutritious. Many of humanity’s most important crops — including wheat, potatoes, beans — contain fewer vitamins and minerals than they did a generation ago. The culprit behind this damaging phenomenon? Carbon dioxide pollution.
You know that denialist talking point about hey, CO2 is plant food! based on somebody’s dimly recalled 8th grade science lesson on chloroplasts? So let’s shut that shit down now. A low carbon atmosphere = good nutrition Climate crisis = health crisis www.washingtonpost.com/climate-envi...
But the climate science deniers and fossil fuel shills running the DOE and EPA these days claim that carbon emissions aren’t dangerous but good for plants and good for us. www.washingtonpost.com/climate-envi...
shot chaser man, we really are gonna be "that" civilization that loved cars so much, we let them bankrupt us, destroy the oceans, destabilize global politics, wreck our cities, slaughter our children, and now, apparently, slowly starve us to death. www.washingtonpost.com/climate-envi...

Congressman Brian Chisholm (R-Maryland) said that more CO² is "good for plants." Marjorie Taylor Green said that "global warming" will make more land arable, giving us more food. Plants grown in high CO² environments have significantly less nutritional value. www.washingtonpost.com/climate-envi...

Certain ideas start making inroads in the collective consciousness. But the main line of the fossil lobby propaganda remains exactly the opposite. "CO2 is good for plants, and hence good for you." www.washingtonpost.com/climate-envi...
Here is another reason to switch to renewable energy-sources. The CO2 rise in the atmosphere is reducing the minerals in our food, leading to lack of iron and zinc. This leads to complications and death in birth, amongst other health problems! www.washingtonpost.com/climate-envi...
Carbon dioxide pollution is depleting essential nutrients in global staple crops. A Leiden University meta-analysis shows a 3.2% drop in vitamins and minerals since 1988, with zinc levels in chickpeas projected to fall nearly 40% by 2040, risking an epidemic of "hidden hunger."

Climate Change is Making Food Less Nutritious- increasing malnutrition in third world countries #climate www.washingtonpost.com/climate-envi...
You know it really is astonishing the number of ways that climate change is trying to kill us. Maybe Gaia is real and she is fuckin pissed? www.washingtonpost.com/climate-envi...
Yikes. Not only will #climatechange impact the availability of food, but likely the nutritional value of what grow. In developed countries, larger portions (or more weight gain) to get the same nutrients. In poor countries, won't have that luxury of producing excess food. #agriculture #adaptation
How about dying? Guess I'll just die, right?
