The crisis of Christianity in America today consists of the white Evangelicals, whose political obsessions have nothing to do with Christianity. The white Evangelical embrace of Donald Trump constitutes a crisis for Christianity—and an opportunity to rediscover the virtues of Christian humanism.
"Trump’s contempt and cruelty toward his enemies has been an important part of his appeal to his Christian base. Many of Trump’s supporters relish his dehumanization of those they despise. Trump might be a bully, but he’s their bully." www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
Peter Wehner reports on a topic I’ve wanted to know about a LONG time: how do Christian evangelicals square their emphatic support of cruel, non-loving, misogynist Christ-forsaking Trump with Christ’s loving teachings in the four gospels? Shocking:

For decades [American Christians] felt looked down on, mocked, and dishonored by elite culture. Tremendous distrust and resentment built up within them, a longing to strike out at the individuals, institutions, and movements they came to hate.
In my life, all the harm, pain, anger, strife, abuse, and violence I have experienced has been inflicted by white Christians spouting Jesus at me and their Jesus didn’t like me.

"Narrowing the enormous difference between the Christianity of our land and the Christianity of Christ is the urgent calling of our time."
Nope. Too late. There’s no coming back from fascism. And this Pride month, I’m old enough to remember in the HIV/AIDS epidemic how EVERY “Christian” sect wanted us dead or couldn’t be bothered to help. May they all rot in hell with their “Christian” values.

True Christianity is not at odds with “the best which has been thought and said in the world.” (Matthew Arnold). Like pre-Christian Marcus Aurellias, it embraces the divine spark in all of us. It is real, and it endures despite the flotsam and dross of the world.

This is a thoughtful essay.
I do it a disservice by offering this crude summary… Christianity should be confident, serene, and accepting of doubt, not fearful, loud, and full of misplaced confidence.
If you have the time and inclination, then please read it.
(Note: I am no longer a believer.)
Good article, too. that said:
1. lumping all "Christians" together with the American Heresy is a category error.
2 Pastor Jeffres presumes to "save this nation", when HIS heretical variant of "Christianity" isn't even 150 years old.

Evangelical roundup for June 11, 2026
What is happening today at the intersection of Evangelicalism and politics? Many evangelicals gathered earlier this month at the National Cathedral for an event on "Christian humanism." I don't know if Peter Wehner was there, but his recent piece at The…
Not sure some are paying enough attention to the militarization of the evangelicals. I personally received a very disturbing "sermon" from a family member last week that still has me fucked up, praying essentially for a christofascist state and otherizing me.

“It’s important to understand, however, that Trump didn’t fundamentally change the sensibilities of many evangelicals as much as he embodied them.”
The worst among them believe the country is theirs and “Warrior Jesus” gives them the right to take it. ($ site)

Writer wildly underestimates widespread lust for political power in modern American Christianity and thinks a few positivity workshops will refocus Christians on a Christ-centered movement away from Trumpism. // “American Christians Face a Choice - The Atlantic” www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/06/…
