1/3 www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...

Espérate tú, que los mismos que les metieron en el Brexit los van a atontar del todo con el cierre de servicios públicos, el ataque a los funcionarios y, si eso falla, con el odio a los inmigrantes. V Britannia rules the Plague. www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...
Blaming everything on culture wars ignores the real elephant in the room: the UK's catastrophic productivity crisis. We are now benchmarking against America's poorest states. Until we fix real growth and investment, populist anger will only get stronger. 🏗️💔👇
I don't agree with everything in this article, but it is very well-written & worth reading.

www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202... I read this out of cussed curiosity. I DO NOT KNOW SQUAT - got that? I knew Maggie Thatcher started this, Reagan's buddy . . . Huge point: taxation is not mentioned once. I'm betting the rich are paying next to nothing, probably not even property taxes.
A brutal but necessary read. Britain’s tragedy is not decline. Nations rise and fall. It is the refusal to understand why. Decades confusing nostalgia for strategy, slogans for policy, and exceptionalism for competence. www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...

Nigel Farage/Vladimir Putin foisted Brexit on the nationalistic dumbfucks who ran the country into the ground and sold it off for parts. It's no wonder that Trump praises Brexit, because he's doing the same thing to the U.S. These people are traitors.
See if this worked www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...
“Arresting the current trajectory of decline will require the recognition of a hard truth. What broke Britain was not Brussels, bad luck, or bankers. The British broke Britain. To mend it, they must first stop breaking it further.”
"One generation ago, Britain was a major global power; today, it is a middling one, gripped by sclerosis. " www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...
Key conclusion: "What broke Britain was not Brussels, bad luck, or bankers. The British broke Britain. To mend it, they must first stop breaking it further." #BREXIT www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...
It's sad it had to go this way, but thank you Britain for making the best modern case for Keynesian economics. https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/2026/07/uk-productivity-economy-reform-party/687303/
'In 2007, before the global financial crisis, Britain was at its postimperial zenith. Median household income had just surpassed that of Germany. A pound was worth more than $2, and London was arguably displacing New York as the center of international banking'. www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...

Sad to read this, about a country where I lived, worked, paid taxes & contributed for several decades. Self sabotaging decisions, lamentably poor leadership, clinging to exceptionalism have accumulated over time leading to a belief that ‘only Farage can fix it’ www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...

The collapse of Britain's economy - I had no idea it was this bad, and getting worse! Some factors are echoed in the USA, e.g. antipathy toward immigrants. More excellent reporting from The Atlantic: www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202... Please repost this so others can read it too!

Our impression over here is that, just like in the USA, there are indeed masses of people who can’t afford the basics of a good life. For example, the attached article. Is it full of lies?https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/2026/07/uk-productivity-economy-reform-party/687303/
Since Jeffrey Goldberg took over as Editor in Chief of The Atlantic, there has been (it seems to me) a distressing increase in "annoy the libs" clickbait headlines. The recent piece by Idrees Kahloon, "How Britain Became as Poor as Mississippi" is a case in point www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...
www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202... This is succinct
The Atlantic on the UK’s two-decade productivity collapse & what’s filling the political vacuum. A useful warning shot for anyone confident in American exceptionalism. I can't stop thinking of this line by Thomas Sowell, "Poor people are poor because they make poor decisions."
Because Anglo political culture is defective. www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...
In this Atlantic article on what's gone wrong economically in Britain, interestingly "the universities aren't preparing workers" isn't mentioned. To any outside observer not soaked in domestic discourse, it's evident that the UK has simply self-sabotaged on growth www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...

Yes, but we Americans have way out-Brexited the Brits, with predictable results. We aspire to be Mississippi.
If you don't already subscribe to The Atlantic, try it. It's one of the best sources of US news. It's carrying a harrowing, but mostly true, piece about the decline of the UK. @theatlantic.com www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...
www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...
This piece gets much of the diagnosis correct but then ACTUALLY ENTERTAINED the possibility of a Reform government. This can never be allowed to happen. Look at the racism for what it is, dump that crap, and get the UK back to the real world. www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...
UK Decline & Fall News: Arresting UK current trajectory of decline will require the recognition of a hard truth. What broke Britain was not Brussels, immigrants, bad luck, or bankers. A crucial essay on Britain's economic and social decline in the last two decades. It's not all due to Brexit, but most of it is definitely self-inflicted. Not British myself, but I hope the UK finds a way - nationalism and Reform UK are not it, in my opinion www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...
This guy literally co-founded Vote Leave and he's "talking Britain down" because the economy isn't what it was? Balls of steel. www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...

Britain Became as Poor as Mississippi Discussion
Found this article so informative but the material may not be of interest to many. Britain = Mississippi is about as big a slur that can be hurled, even if accurate. www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...
UK is unreasonably expensive, esp in London, to foster expansion of tourist industry. London refuses to tax wealthy foreigners. UK spends far too much on bad military investments; far too little on green investment. Its people are insular, hostile to change. www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...

The country’s output per person is now only just above that of Mississippi, America’s poorest state—and that slight lead is only achieved thanks to London. Outside the capital, in places where tourists do not visit, living standards fall well below Mississippi’s. www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...
Good read on Britain’s self-sabotage beginning with Thatcher and extending through Blair-ite austerity, compounded by Brexit. The last bit about Farage is a brick to the face wrapped in a velvet glove. Anyway, as an American, I read it and wept, as we already elected our fascist right party.

Britain Became as Poor as Mississippi
This is a very long article on Great Britain. Commentors are calling the Mississippi comparison clickbait. Author and commentors agree that Reform is not the answer. As for the rest, I'm not there and can't judge. Thought you might find article interesting.
British wages have lagged well behind those in the U.S., Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Denmark; after accounting for inflation, they’ve barely grown at all. Within the next decade, the typical Pole will have a standard of living equal to the typical Brit, if current trends continue.
Wtf? www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...
It is so upsetting to reckon with how far Britain has chosen to descend into a morass of its own making, and to regard the fact that the politicians who seem most likely to benefit from it are themselves unruly xenophobes and not people of good will. www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...
