Doomerism is indispensable to Christian nationalists, because it is only the downfall of democracy that makes the patriarchy palatable. But when you impose patriarchy back onto a society that has already embraced liberalism, you mainly remind people of why they chose liberalism in the first place.
A must read from the incomparable @davidfrenchjag.bsky.social www.nytimes.com/2026/06/14/o...
“There is nothing new about the MAGA right, including its Christian nationalist wing. Its ideas have been tried before, and they have failed before, including in a regime that is rightly remembered by the French as a source of national shame.” www.nytimes.com/2026/06/14/o...
I don’t think I would have predicted that of all the conservative columnists in the 2000s, David French would be the most consistently interesting twenty years later, but there we are. www.nytimes.com/2026/06/14/o...
"MAGA右翼、そしてそのキリスト教ナショナリスト派には、何も新しいものはない。彼らの思想は過去にも試みられ、そして失敗に終わっている。フランス国民が国家の恥辱として正当に記憶している政権もその一つだ" これ、今の自民党、統一教会、日本会議と置き換えても通用する内容。高市がトランプ好きな理由かもね。 MAGAとフランスとのつながり NYT www.nytimes.com/2026/06/14/o...

I find this "French connection" between the ethos of Vichy and the ideology of Christian MAGA nationalism very persuasive. I want to highlight, however, that anti-liberal norms against women in the labor force aren't restricted to modern Christian nationalists or ... www.nytimes.com/2026/06/14/o...

As @davidfrenchjag.bsky.social makes MAGA-Vichy comparisons, let's note the following Vichyites who were executed: - Pierre Laval, the regime's chief political operator - Joseph Darnand, head of the Vichy version of ICE - Jean Luchaire, the leading press collaborator www.nytimes.com/2026/06/14/o...

It is democracy, liberalism, and the protection of human rights that has made America great because it is in meant to allow all individuals to "pursue their happiness" and to reach their human potential as they choose. Historical note: how Vichy France was precursor to MAGA US- "Vichy regime’s core argument: Liberal democracy had failed. Its individualism and its decadence...resulted in the military and moral catastrophe" The solution? "opposition to liberal individualism" www.nytimes.com/2026/06/14/o...

@davidfrenchjag.bsky.social explores how Vichy France was MAGA's wet dream. Misogyny, nativism, antisemitism--all were essential to Vichy's ethos. And everything that wasn't Fascist had to be Communist. Organic "duties" displaced "rights". If this is what turns you on, then MAGA is for you.
