Sometimes a writer (or editor) cooks up a conceit for an article that sounds good, but halfway through the writing, it becomes clear that the conceit—the argument, the framing—doesn't work. It warps rather than clarifies. It's usually best to quit at that point. Because if you don't pull the plug:
