#geography #Arctic
Gift article. It’s fascinating how unimpeded access & transit through the Arctic has been an obsession of nations and empires since the Northwest Passage and the doomed British Franklin Expedition, fantasies now made fact by how radically we’ve changed the planet. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/08/w...

Appreciate this more nuanced assessment of Arctic shipping routes -- as it notes, it's still quite dangerous and expensive, and the travel time is hard to predict. Also buried in the article is that South Korea is *also* testing this route, so China is not alone.
“This is a big deal. China is the only non-Arctic country that is actually doing something like this...China is a master at doing things that don’t seem commercial, necessarily, in the beginning, [eventually] it all adds up to a geostrategic win” -Dexter Roberts www.nytimes.com/2026/09/08/w...

Sounds like we're still a while away from this being a regular thing (the service season is basically two months) but I found this justification notable: "As Sea Legend executives pointed out, it also avoids conflict zones in the Middle East." www.nytimes.com/2026/09/08/w...

«The Chinese are now promoting the first regular cargo service to use the Northern Sea Route, an Arctic shortcut from Asia to Europe across the top of the world. This week, the Dubai Tower, a Chinese cargo ship, is finishing a three-week journey from Qingdao to Teesport in England.»
"But many of the Arctic watchers tracking the Dubai Tower's little blinking dot as it moves across the screen on maritime websites are asking the same question: Is this smart business—or more of a bold geopolitical move?" www.nytimes.com/2026/09/08/w...
