Weeks before Democrat Josh Stein took office as governor, NC Republicans stripped his power to appoint county election chairs, handing it to their state auditor instead. Every board is now GOP run, some by election deniers, right as Democrats try to flip a Senate seat there.

But this is nothing to worry about, right? Danny Bartlett, chair of local election board since 2023, recently posted an image of Joseph Stalin on Substack, along with his apocryphal quote “It’s not who votes that counts, it’s who counts the votes.”

Right-wing activists establish an unprecedented grip on local electoral infrastructure across battleground states. By replacing nonpartisan officials on county election boards, Trump allies secure the administrative authority to delay certifications and disrupt future midterm and presidential races.
