The soaring costs of public universities is a political decision. When these schools predominantly served white students, they tended to be free (UC, CCNY, etc.) But as the number of students of color has increased, funding for the public universities has decreased. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/b...
We defund public higher ed, effectively privatizing it, and then are furious about the obvious consequences www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/b...
“This, like so many laments about what things cost in America, is a housing story. Public schools that provide a residential undergraduate education are also selling undergraduates an education in what it means to afford a residence.”

“does a state school have a special responsibility to provide cut-rate beds to everyone who wants one?” Thats the central question in this story and it’s the wrong thing to ask. Why? www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/b...
I am so grateful for my wife's Canadian citizenship. Our oldest started college at a top school in Canada, and all in tuition + room + board + ancillary costs is ~US$22,000. This article points out that the UC schools, for in-state students, is over $50,000. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/b...
Many many publics and privates have instituted good programs to reduce or eliminate tuition and even books costs. But it’s much harder to control housing prices. Especially when campuses let private developers build the housing around campus.
A high profile symptom of how baby boomers like to pull up the ladders and how messed up the tax system is in California. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/b...
"The University of California, Berkeley, posted an all-in price — tuition, room, board, fees and other expenses that make up the full cost of attendance — of $54,674 this year for new in-state students living in a campus residence hall." Rumors suggest that Md is cutting back on instate kids.
Seems bad. Though only confined to California for now. Three public universities in the US now have officially posted *in-state* cost of attendance over $50k/yr: UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, and UC Santa Barbara.
The reason public college costs are rising is simple: conservative Republicans And neo-liberal Democrats have cut funding SUNY, the joke goes, went from state-funded to state-supported to state-located. Public Colleges Are Passing the $50,000-a-Year Mark. For Locals. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/b...

We used to invest much more public funding in education and basic scientific research. We also had a higher number of honest, competent legislators who understood that a democratic society required a government that was willing to help level the playing field. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/b...

“But the housing supply both on campus and off did not keep up as the university grew, and the area’s geography is one big reason. The school is hemmed in by an airport and bodies of water, including the Pacific Ocean.” As state school tuition rises, housing lags. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/b...
