“The share of Americans who say raising children is unaffordable jumped 20 percentage points during the last decade. And while people in their 30s today are more highly educated than earlier generations, they are more than twice as likely to remain saddled with steep student loan payments.”

A young woman in Queens celebrated her 30th birthday with cake, champagne — and an existential crisis over still living paycheck to paycheck. A 30-year-old in Manhattan felt ready to consider marriage, but knew he couldn’t afford a wedding. And in Brooklyn, a couple, at 32... By Troy Closson

And as if on cue, this.
“In the past, the idea was that you would check all these boxes by 30, give or take,” Mr. Crittenden said. “But the more I think about it, so much of that is incredibly out of reach.”
This is what happens when you keep putting billionaires in charge and electing them to run the government. The reason they're billionaires is because they are not paying you what you're worth. They are keeping more wealth than ever before that should have been distributed to the working class.

This @nytimes.com article is so badly written. \ Every statistic quoted is about "feelings". The one question that matters, whether a 30-year-old today is materially worse off than a 30-year-old in 1990, is posed in the standfirst and then, somehow, never tested? www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/n...
Just as with young people in Europe, young Americans are struggling. But if they were to take to the streets here en masse, they will quickly learn that the post-9/11 forces of surveillance and enforcement are astonishingly powerful. Be careful out there! www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/n...

Young Americans need help. My students say they can't afford to buy a house, start a family & develop a secure standard of living. Democrats must address these issues ASAP if they seriously want to solve this threat not just to our youth but the future of our country www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/n...

This is nothing new. I lived paycheck to paycheck until I was well into my 40s. French fries sound like a real treat when I lived on a package of Top Ramen or a single plain baked potato a day for years. I had no savings, no extra money, was barely able to afford rent & utilities.
This is an "evergreen" story. It applies to every city, town, village in this country. And, yet, people do settle down, have kids, raise them... www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/n...
