Men need to speak out on this, in Universities, in the WSL, in public and on socials: Surfers have long kept their experiences of sexual violence and harassment mostly private. Recently, they spilled into the public discourse.

The WSL does not come out of this looking good at all. A blanket policy of prohibiting "any act, regardless of time or place, which casts the sport of surfing or WSL in a negative light" is designed to prevent whistleblowing. Burn it down.

People who are not familiar with surfing might think most surfers care about competitive surfing. Most don't. Whole other thing. Personally, I find surfing-as-a-sport to be kind of silly. www.nytimes.com/athletic/773...
